would be to the amount of his pecuniary
capital – money to the same amount – would be
employed by him in the purchase of labour – the efficient
causes and instruments, eceptacles, materials &c the component parts of his real productive
capital, in both cases in one case, as in the other: the difference is – that if
no money were imported, the money so employed
would be money taken out of the old stock; in the
other case, money added to that stock.

Iy may be now be seen, how it should may
happen that an addition may be made to capital
(meaning real productive capital) by means of
paper money where employed in the shape of pecuniary
capital, more than and over and above whatever any
that can be made by metallic money. For In
the case of metallic money whether drawn out
of the old stock, or added de novo to that stock
it is all of it so much taken out of the pre-existing
profit of trade, and limited by the amount of
those profits in each instance: whereas, in the
case of paper money, the addition of so much
new money of this sort as can be
borrowed on the credit of such preceding profit
of trade, is so much money – so much pecuniary
capital – more than the person who that borrower in question could
otherwise have had at his disposal. have had the command of otherwise.
