Constitutional Procedure Code.Ch. Costs
Evil the 7th: evil produced by the splitting of the class
of mercenary Law assistants into various sub classes.
In the nature of the case the evil in this shape is
not essential to and inseparable from the act of employing
in the business hands of the mercenary sort in the
business. In fact, in the Anglo American United States

The mercenary Law Assistant is now divided into
the Attorney and the Advocate: each of them is again
split into ulterior divisions; and at every division the
delay vexation and expence are encreased, and for the
most part more than doubled. But on this occasion
the result of the first division must suffice for a sample
of the whole.
Now comes in the plague of written statements
interposed between the mouth of the percipient witness and
the ears of those to whom it belongs to judge: are the statements
none of which are after all destined to ever to rank
those only well paid and consummately fastidious ears
those statements made in waste not being so much as designed
ever to reach his eyes or ears.
