that the happiness of others is to be consulted as
well as our own.
As to the Law of Revelation we have proved that
it is so far from being the foundation of
municipal Law, that it derives it's own
force & existence in Society from municipal
Law.

To be copied what will make him happy in a State of
Society the object of happiness becomes more
complicated and the great art of a le the legislator
consists in reconciling individual with
individual social happiness. the good of each single man with the good of the whole. As laws approach nearer to
or recede farther from this object they are more or
less perfect. But it is absurd to say that call this or that
particular law, a law of nature, & then to set it
up as the criterion by which to judge of municipal
Law: For it is in fact municipal Law which is to
judge whether any particular action is good
or bad: since it is municipal Law which is
by determining the relation one member of society is to stand in to another, & both to the whole, is
to determine whether any given Law will
be conducive to individual or social happiness.
Theft would be productive of much misery
in England: & would have produced no
misery in Sparta. In the one therefore it
would be a crime, in the other it was a
matter of indifference.
As to the Law of Revelation we have proved
that so far from being the foundation
of municipal Law, that it derives it's own
force & existence reception in Society from municipal
Law.
Our Author's next absurdity was in consequence is talking of
a Law of Nations. That, as well as the
Law of Nature is a meer Creature of the brain
