§. 7 Mental vexation simple
Examples or Species.
1. Terrification by fear of unliquidated evil from supernatural
causes; stories of threatening appearances,
of disembodied human souls, or evil spirits; stories of
witchcraft and sorcery, and death or other
calamity predicted by astrology or prophecy.
If it be to an individual or small and determinate
assemblage of individuals that the terrification
applies itself, the offence is a private one:
If to a multitude of unassignable individuals, a
semi publick one: If, from the tenor, thus endeavoured
to be inspired any profit in any
shape to the delinquent or any other person is
endeavoured to be procured, the offence takes a
different character, and comes under the head
of defraudment – which see
