They found out the pretty early the way of
making a man pay money [when it was thought
he ought to pay be made to pay money: it] They seized his goods if they
could find any, & sold them and gave the money
to him to whom he himself ought to have given it.
if they could find no goods they too seized his person body,
took it for granted he could pay the money, and kept
him in jail till he should do so. But they had no
notion of its being possible to make a man do
any thing else; or to abstain from any thing:
to perform an agreement specifically: to discharge
a trust, to make a conveyance of any kind: to
abstain from thing was to: in short to perform any
kind of service to any body, positive or negative.
