Why ignorance of the Law is made a ground
of extenuation ?

Reasons

Because punishment in this case would be
inefficacious . In this case also there is no
punishment before his eyes : there is none therefore
that can have any effect on him .

Why ignorance of the Law is not made a
ground of total exemption ? <lb>

Reasons

1. Because the matter of fact can scarcely
be perfectly ascertained . See above Quest. 2.
N. B. It can not be with could not with propriety
be stiled a ground of justification or because
it does not either take away or outweigh
the mischief .
