inconveniences of delay are much more various.
In the first place it adds to the dangers of im-
-punity. For the longer time there is after the interval in between

the act of delinquency and the time and before
the punishment is inflicted, the greater time
there is for death and other accidental causes
of releasement to take place. In the place

it tends to weaken the preventive effect of the punishment:
although it actually takes place at last, yet the
delay if considerable may to contri-
-bute in a certain degree by weakening the ap-
-parent connection between the mischievous
act considered as a cause, and the punish-
-ment considered as an effect to weakening
the efficacy of the latter in preventing
offences of the like kind.
