A Pleasure of Possession is a pleasure arising from the idea
of the present Possession of something which in this view is
stiled an object of Possession.
Objects of Possession are either Real or Figurative.
Real Objects of Possession are the several sorts of substances
we see and handle.
Figurative Objects of Possession, are Rights devised from
real ones. Hence to understand them we must begin with
real ones. It is one of the inconveniences of language to
associate the name of an idea that has no architype in nature
with the name of one that has.
Real Objects of Possession are either valuable or not valuable.
Objects of Possession that are valuable that is Articles
of Wealth are either valuable intrinsically, or valuable by representation. Objects valuable intrinsicially are valuable either
1st as Instruments of Pleasure 2dly as remote instruments
of enjoyment 3dly as immediate Instruments of Security 4thly
as remote Instruments of Security.
Immediate Instruments of enjoyment are such as have
already seen.
Remote instruments of enjoyment are such Objects not immediate instruments
of enjoyment as serve to the production or preservation of those
that are. 6
