Of whatever nature a Pleasure be: a
Pleasure of the Body, or a Pleasure of the
mind: [] a pleasure of enjoyment, a
pleasure of possession, or a pleasure of expectation:
a pleasure of the concupiscible appetite,
or a pleasure of the irascible, if it exist, two things
if it exist, it must exist under two dimensions it must possess: It must have intensity, and
it must have continuance duration: the result product
of both may be called it's magnitude. Tis the Cause that is the Band of connection between Pleasures & Pleasures between sensation and sensation
What we shall have to say of any pleasure in the
present chapter will be found equally to belong
to all: and as it is the same with respect
to Pain. and so is it with Pains.
2.
Intensity A pleasure of compared with an other an other
pleasures or with pains, is either long or
short. intense or slight faint. so hence we have to speak of it's
intensity.
3.
Duration Again, the time it lasts it is either of long or short: continuance hence we
have to consider it's duration.
4.
Belong to all This is the case with every pleasure: to exist
it must possess two things: it must possess
intensity: it must possess duration.
5.
Dimensions of Body Body to exist, must in like manner possess
three things. Length, breadth and thickness.
under these it is contained: by these it is comprized: these constitute it's
magnitude: in respect of these it is said to be great or small:
by these it is measured: Mathematicians call them it's dimensions.
"Dimensions" comes from "dimetion".
Dimetion" is to measure.
6.
Dimensions of Pleasure. Of Mathematicians Let us borrow of them their term appellation: and let us say.
Pleasure also is comprized exists under two dimensions: intensity
and duration.
7.
Number Thus much far with respect to Pleasure consider'd
in single persons: but we have to consider
it in a State. A State consists of a num-
