having any such Opinion five Things are necessary;
1st. That he know there is such a
Law [upon the Subject;] which belongs to Notoriety:
2dly. That he understand it, when he has got it,
which belongs to Perspicuity: 3dly That he remember
what he has understood i.e. that he [who] remember it [& understand it] at the ... doing the action which the Law commands, forbids, permitts or regulates comes upon him, which besides
the former Circumstances depends also upon its
Brevity: i.e. the smallness of its Volume 4thly. That the Law be usually executed
upon those who transgress, which belongs to
Certainty: 5thly, That he know that it is so,
or at least that he know not to the contrary,
which belongs again to Notoriety.
Of these four Circumstances, viz: Notoriety,
Certainty of Execution, Perspicuity &
Brevity, the two former are extrinsic, depending
upon something that is without the Law: consequently
there remain the two intrinsic Circumstances
of Perspicuity & Brevity Brevity Volume ... Brevity is ... relative ... number ....
