Expressing an image by lines. In this the idea is formed in the mind, it is then ideally , expressed upon the surface it is afterwards to be traced upon, the hand guiding the tool at an almost imperceptible distance & following the eye as it conceives the image & applies it to the surface where it is to be expressed.

Knowledge subservient to the art of expressing an image by shades. The apparent effect of the presence produced by the impinging of light upon uneven surfaces in respect to form.

The means of applying shades of one colour upon an even substance so that their gradations shall represent uneven surfaces, excite in the mind the idea of an uneven substance So much of optics as relate to light & shade.
