Continuing the discussion at TEI Thoughts, we can customise the Toolbar in the Mediawik text editor to better reflect what transcriber users will need. Table below is for suggestions...

N.b. the markup agreed will also need to be reflected in Editing Help pages.

I've added another 'TEI Markup' column to the table in order to see how the wiki/html markup might map to TEI. --Justintonra 14:55, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

For the moment, I have simply listed a number of features of the manuscript and their associated TEI code - I will return again to figure about wiki/html mapping and possible button icons. --Justintonra 15:41, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Foreign ??? $TEXT Text in a language other than English. @xml:lang attribute may be used (French: salut
Gap ??? <gap/> Illegible text. @reason attribute may be used: . @unit and @extent also possible.
Unclear ??? $TEXT A doubtful reading. When a user is unsure about the word they have transcribed. Can be distinguished from the empty element <gap/>, because a guess has been made at the word.

Notes ??? $TEXT A possible means of dealing with marginal notes and summaries? @type attribute to distinguish: $TEXT or $TEXT. @place, @target attributes also available

Marks a page break: will be important if encoding bifolios
Unusual spelling ??? encreased Unusual or apparently incorrect spellings

Ligature ??? & #230; & #339; æ and œ ligatures. Codes also available for upper-case ligatures, and various accented letters.
