Sentences to be short
Crowd not too many things into a sentence. let
not your sentences be short. The shorter they are, the
easier they will be apprehended and remembered ++ Prefat. p.16.Children
2 Enumeration - to be performed in a sentence by itself
When a long train of articles are to be enumerated
for any purpose let not the enumeration be
included in the middle of a paragraph, but perform it
by a paragraph on purpose.
3Simplicity must be preferred
It is not enough to render a compose such
a body of Laws as shall be methodical and concise:
the business is if possible to keep it so. The business
is if possible to keep it to to the end of time.
4Horace's rule of Brevity
Quiquid principias, esto brevis:
says Horace: and he adds the reason

5 Brevity and explicitness
A discourse should be short, to be remembered: explicit,
to be understood.
6Explicitness for common use
What may be not explicit enough to suggest all
tho cares of itself & without expiration, may of itself be explicit
enough to suggest the greater number of cases, and
those which are apt most frequently to occur.
7Explicitness for recollection
What is not explicit enough for [the conveying of] to convey original instruction
in the first instance may be explicit enough for the assistance of recollection
