Settlers hopeless partly to the faculty of exchange. To exercise this faculty
with any tolerable convenience and advantage .. The exercise
of this faculty requires a double market is indisputable a market where he can sell what he has to spare: a
market where he can purchase what he stands in need
of.

In all these particulars we shall find some remarkable
inconvenience, deficiency difficulty, or even total impossibility
pressing bearing upon the condition of the unhappy inhabitant
of New South Wales.

The property whatever he has at any given moment, or
may be others be already in possession of, or thinking and
endeavouring to acquire, he will find continually encompassed and threatened beret by no fewer than
nine perfectly distinguishable causes of destruction each of
them singly existing in a magnitude sufficient to repel
a prudent man from a spot that has so little of so compleatly destitute of every positive
profit advantage or pleasure to recommend it. 1 draught — 2 Fire by
hostility of native savages. 3 Force by hostility of
malefactors. Fire, even by the inclemency spontaneouslty of unassisted
Draught parching up the fruit vegetation of the earth, spontaneous
as well as cultivated and cutting off for a whole
