The fame objections would lie against
making the law of Nature the foundation
of municipal Law: even supposing allowing such a law to exist: & to be learnable in the manner our Author suppo supposes. For even he has allowed with this additional
circumstance: that as it is not quite so
easy to define what is the law of Nature,
as it is to define what is we mean by the law of
Revelation: there would scarcely therefore remain
any no rule of obedience at all. For one man, might co-hesive would find one municipal law to be contrary
to his idea of the law of nature, and
another a second another: and therefore, according
to our Author's rule, no State could
enforce obedience to any. At all times, & among all men this inconvenience
would arise: that we must confound
two very different ideas: that which is
expedient Lawful, with and that which is Lawful expedient.
