1 ADULTERY — Of Wife why disgraceful to the Husband It is a common affectation among popular moralists
to treat it as an explicable problem,
why it is that<add>when the when the Gallant, at least in certain countries & in a certain rank, even rears his head the higher. the infidelity of the Wife should
reflect, is apt to reflect commonly a degree of disgrace
upon the injured Husband: as if the custom propensity to regard
the matter in that light were a mere
caprice, which bore no analogy to the general
tenor of human sentiments, nor had any connection
with the general principles of Human

permitting himself that license which is aflamed

of its nature and its origination instead of setting themselves down calmly to studying of its history & its properties in order to Devise what methods may
be discovered for destroying it, join together in
regarding it as an inexplicable and
instrument of vengeance in the hand of Heaven.
