Actually, scratch that: just spoken to a historian of Germany, and the word in question is 'Carmer', after a Prussian historian called Johann Heinrich Casimir Graf von Carmer. Thanks!

Re. JB/041/138/001 - we added sic tags to the other 'it's' here, as it seems to be an idiosyncracy of this particular copyist. Thanks very much for this, Jan!

Hi Jan, thanks for taking this on - this was written in the 1820s, by which time JB's eyesight was pretty much shot! It certainly doesn't improve his handwriting.
'Constitutional' in the heading is bang on, and we've sorted the distribution of 'copd' - it should now be showing up on the main line. We've filled in a couple of the blanks on the pencilled marginal note, but it's a tricky one - these are JB's summaries of to which part of a work the text belongs.
The superscript character is an 'o', so 'do' for 'ditto' - not the most obvious when JB is indeed writing them as a '6'. Finally, you're quite right about the two vertical lines: these are, we think, to indicate that the following text should begin on a new line. We've left is as you entered it.
thanks again, and best wishes!
