This one was very good, and is of a really interesting manuscript: it's part of an unpublished work on New South Wales, which when we've pieced it back together should be very revealing. Hi Jan,

On the 'l' sign, you were quite right to transcribe as it appears - this is an eighteenth/nineteenth century way of writing '£', mostly seen in printed documents like this one.

Thanks too for transcribing that note as a paragraph at the bottom, with the asterisks indicating where they go - spot on.

As to transcribing the next manuscript, I would go for it. We generally suggest that if someone has worked on it in the past couple of weeks, it's best to send them a message via their user page to see if they are still using it. Since this one hasn't been worked on since the end of August, do go for it!

We also hope to implement some means of moving between successive manuscripts when we upgrade the interface in the coming months.

Thanks very much for this one, Jan. We've indicated the italics using comment tags for the time being - when it comes to making the improvements to the transcription interface in the coming months, we may need to add the facility to add italics, not to mention ways of indicating the indentation and positioning of text. We are pretty sure that the deleted word in the heading of this and preceding manuscripts is 'compensation'. Awkward one this - we've left the first one as a continuation into the margin, though have changed the one at the end into a note, as JB uses his asterisk-style indicators.

Finally, that odd word in pencil is (we think) 'Dumont', as in Etienne Dumont - a French writer and friend of Bentham. Dumont thought JB was a genius, but that his writing style was a bit obscure, so set about editing and abridging Bentham's works into something readable. A tough job, as we know!
