are not effected by the Duty or restrictions. By putting several
Small Lots together they can as readily dispose of them by Auction
as if they had originally been pledged together, particularly as they
are not required to account for the produce of any of these Articles:
And there is little fear that those pledges when sold by Public
Auction will not secure their principal with very good Interest
for the same as altho the Sum lent upon each Lot is under 10
Shillings the intrinsic Value is frequently worth treble that Sum
It may possibly be said that Power Broker books being open to
Ispectors may not only injure their Business, but would be to
the , & perhaps injurious to the credit of some Persons who,
perhaps only from a temporary necessity apply to them for assistance:
For my own part(provided the Pawn Brokers does not buy or sell
Old Metals, wearing apparell &c by private contracts) I think the
Inspection of his Books might dispensed with, unless upon any particular
occasion at the requisition of the Magistrate.
