§. 2. Of Forgery in the way of Fabrication – General Principles

Expedients here termed of spoken of as being
of the ensnaring kind may well be termed so, since

the more eligible object, prevention. Expedients
of the preventive kind, on the other hand embrace

superior still: prevention, in the instance of the
great number multitude of criminal depraved characters
ingenious profligates who, might but for this
bar, might have been disposed to hazard the
attempt: detection in the instance of this or
that desperate offender, should any such
arise, whose temerity may have shut his
eyes against the hazard of the enterprize.

I dwell the more particularly on this head,
suspecting that under the present system, a more
considerable degree of reliance is placed on the
secret marks are actually employed: and that thus, for want
of such making them the use that might be made
of the class of expedients, as of the expedients of obstructive class of expedients, as above
exemplified, the apparent facility chance of
of the practising this species of forgery with
success,⊞ ⊞ and therein the encouragement, as it were, held out to the practice of it, is left much greater than it were to
be instead or were, or than what it need be.
