J.B. to Mora.
2. "L'offre relatif Sir Samuel? Was it presented>
If so to whom? Had it been decidedly received, decidedly accepted, or
reserved for consideration.⊞ ⊞ The following Extract
of a letter of mine to
Mr C. 4th Jany 1821
sent the 5th, applies to
this subject. Here insert
what is inclosed in pencil
in that letter. No 1 pp 1, 2, 3 On the instance I received
from him a letter dated Montpellier 20th Decr in
which in answer to one or more of mine in which I
mentioned what I had done, and expressing as I could
-pected not but expect disposition for and care, but such as it seems to
me that a suitable application from a suitable quarter
would probably determine a fix on the affirmative side.
In another letter be 22d Decr for me infor for my information for a private purpose he transcribes one from the
Duc de Richelieu a letter which though perhaps may be
found not altogether inapplicable to this public purpose. I
therefore inclose it to you with this. It will serve to shew
on what point of view his talents with reference to some
of the points in question are regarded by that Minister. It
will also help to shew what difficulties obstacles his and my desire
to render them serviceable to Spain have to contend against.
Meantime the matter has been mentioned to and approved
by some leading men through other channels.
3d Le paquet arrive par les Two Brothers – "a Madrid"
or "pas encore a Madrid": by either of those short phrases
darkness light would have been substituted to the darkness with
which your humble servant is destined to remain afflicted for
at least a month to come.
