Letters 25 Jany. 1822

has been but one of a number of works which one demand
or another has been keeping on the anvil at the same
time. Of one of them I hope before this reaches you. you
will have received a copy, the transmission of which on the 25th jan9 I have
been assured of by your diplomacy here, by whose favour
I shall likewise endeavor to send the present letter. The direction I believe was left to them - indeed I could have given no other. The
work I speak of, consists of my letters to Count Toreno & in the
advertisement prefixed to it you may have seen the heads of
another containing my a proposal offer in for to draw up an all-
-comprehensive Cod, of Law with an interwoven Rationale
for all Nations professing liberal opinions. The two works
are neither of them quite completed but will both of
them be so. I hope in a few weeks. If it be true what I
have been assured of, is true in that by an act of the 20th
Novr the Portuguese Cortes have given acceptance to an
offer to that effect which I had addressed to them in a shortletter,
it is indeed high time I were occupied in the endeavour
to give accomplishment to it. By I know not what unfortunate
accident a letter of their's dated the 3rd Decr &
addressed to me by their secretary Felgueiras in pursuance
of that act, has failed of reaching me. Of the dispatch
of that letter I have his assurance in another of the
20. Decr written for the purpose of announcing to me the
order of the Cortes in virtue of which I am to receive thro the
Portuguese Mission here the Journals of that Assembly
from the beginning & in due course as they come out.
