§. Falshood affirmative and negative

Art. 1. Falshood is either affirmative or negative,
affirmative falshood false assertion is that which is committed by an affirmative assertion; negative
by a negative: an affirmative <add>falshood false assertion</add> affirmative is where a certain matter of fact(a), real or imaginary
is by the asserter declared to have had place existence in a
certain place at a certain time, although when in truth it
no such matter of fact as the assertion expressed had place existence
at that place and at that time.

For Instead of false assertion a falshood or a falsity is frequently
said for shortness.

Art. 2. A negative falshood false assertion, a negative false
assertion has place is made when a certain at a certain time place
and place time a certain individual matter of fact having had existence
and being at that same place and time present to his
senses and actually perceived by him, he denies its so
having had existence, or in other words which is the same thing, asserts that
at such place and time that same no such individual fact had existence.

Art. 3. With whatsoever diffidence the assertion
affirmative or pro negative has been expressed, an act of mendacity
and insincerity may alike have been committed. Of
the possible degrees of persuasion the number infinite:
as much so as the number those which have place by which the doctrine
of chances is expressed delivered. To say I doubt is but to say
between the the numbers expressive of the chances in favour of the existence of the fact in question
and then expression of the changes in favour of its non-existence
the difference is not very great. To say I know Knowledge is cannot
not in itself be anything more than belief. To say "he
"knows the fact is so" is no more than to say he believes
the fact is so, and so do I: to say I know the fact is so
and so is but to say I belief believe It is my belief the fact is so and
so, and so strong is my belief that it cannot be stronger: so intact
my persuasion that it cannot be more intense.

to 0.
