Of Falshoods in general

To understand the intimacy of their connection the
more throughly it may be of use to examine a
little more closely than was done on a former occasion into the circumstances in which
they differ and agree. To do this the more completely
we shall take each species or mode of falshood
and compare it regularly with every each of the three
others.
The distinction between simple falshood and Personation
turns solely in Personation, upon a single point: viz: upon that the fact which in the falsely averred in
first instance, is made the subject of the falshood. In Personation this fact
each fact falsely declared must be of a particular
narrow description: viz: a particular kind of fact relating
to the personality of a particular individual: in simple
falshood it the fact falsely averred may be any sort of fact whatsoever.
There is no particular fact where in simple falshood which takes the
in this case of whatever other false facts may be averred as in Personation. In neither is the nature of the immaterial
; nor in either is there any set form of words
or any crowning necessity as in Perjury to accompany the assertion.
The distinction between Simple falshood and - between Simple Falshood and Forgery.
turns upon two points. 1. upon the nature
of the signs, by which the averment is performed and 2. as before upon the nature of the act defended averred
in the 1st instance. In simple falshood the chance
signs employed may be of one kind as well as another:
