C
Of Falshoods in general
it can only be in as far as they are of a nature to
operate as evidence with regard to such other secondary
ones. If an imposter wishes to be taken for another
person it is on account of something which he wishes
to say or get credit for in the character of the person
he would represents: If a that he is entitled for instance
to such a sum of money,as being due to that
person: to the company of such a woman,as being
that person's wife: to the protection and maintenance
at the hands of such a man,as being that person's
father, and so on. If a man wishes his writing
to be taken for the writing of another, it is for
the sake of something which by such writing he avers
and witnesses in the character of the person so represented:
the first for instance that he the person
represented promised to pay such a sum of money
to the offender: or saw him married to such a woman:
or saw him born of such a woman; contracted by such a man and such a woman as their child.
Now these secondary facts (it may be ) (seems pretty evident) may
be any sort of facts whatever and may consequently
be as unlimited in their nature as any of the facts
which may be averred in simple falshood in this first instance. The material
