9. with Offences Reflex Self-regarding Offences 9. With self-regarding offences of the self-regarding
class it might seem at first sight that falshood
could have nothing to do: since it is only in a
figurative sense that a man can be said to deceive
himself. But for a man to do himself a mischief
the consent of others may become necessary:
in order either to dispose them either to assist, or at least
to forbear opposing him. In this point of view,
even here any of the sorts of falshood, even here
may come in by accident.
10. with Offences against Justice 10. With regard to Offences against the state.
With one branch of the Offences against Justice, falshood
is in most parts of it essentially combined: that to wit which consists
in practises the tendency of which is to deprive
the judge the of the measure of knowledge or information
or knowledge necessary to the rightful
exercise of his function. Seldom ordinary falshood
alone: often the particular kind of inanimate falshood
here stiled Fucation: Personation, Forgery and
Perjury according to circumstances. In many cases
there will be other name for the offence than what belongs
to the particular mode of falshood, whether it be Fucation,
Personation, Forgery or Perjury by which the obnoxious
