the former: and even still more indubitably of the ordinary
punishment are already still more humiliating.
In such case therefore the additional suffering of the
delinquent vanishes altogether: and the moral lesson
thus given to the people is given them without or to expence.
How in other cases the ignominy may be reduced as libitum
This was In the other case however to wit
when the conscious ordinary punishment includes
no corporal ignimony or when the ceremonies are
in a remarkable degree less humiliating than those
of the extra-ordinary punishment, this merger of the
latter punishment it is evident can not take place.
Unless some provision therefore were made for lessening
upon occasion the quantity quantum of the extra-ordinary ignimony
contained in the extra-ordinary punishment
it might amount to a very considerable sum and the
moral lesson might not be given but at too great
an expense. It is on this account that the characteristic
punishment if thus annexed to these aggravations
is made susceptible of various degrees: in the practice on the one
hand by accompanying the exhibition in certain cases
with circumstances wh calculated to producinge bodily pain, and thereby also to
