Of Falshoods in general
Forgery by Alteration Against one case of Forgery by alteration, to wit
whereby that wherein characters already made are obliterated,
Chemistry, seems to promise and affords an private expedient something might perhaps be done by the help of chemistry. As ink might not improbably be found out which will
of an ink which shall not, like
the inks in common use, be affaceable by acid or
by any other . Against other cases of alteration
something may be done by perhaps the may by
the appointment of particular precautions to be
observed on the process of execution. Where the instrument
consists for instance of more pieces of paper
than one it should be required that the number should be declared and the signature should be applied to
each: and that where any erasure is made the signature
should be repeated in the margin. If alteration
be required, the qualities and abodes of the witnesses
should be required to be inserted opposite to their signatures.
It is to be observed that printed forms as far as they can be made use of have in
respect the advantage in point of inalterability over ordinary writing; because
for as much as is printed is out of the reach of
obliteration or addition as far as concerns the characters.
