Doubt, what not susceptible of degrees Doubt is the mean term between belief and
disbelief. Doubt therefore is not properly susceptible
of degrees. It is only belief and disbelief
that are properly susceptible of degrees.
Belief and disbelief, how measured: The several conceivable degrees of belief and disbelief
may be measured and expressed by the
ratios of chances: nor is there any other way of
measuring or expressing them. When it would appear
to a man (were he to consider the matter
in this light) that the chances in favour of the
fact's having happen'd are to there the chances
in favour of it's not having happen'd as a
given number (so suppose) to the same number,
he may be said to be in doubt about it:
When the former chances would appear to
him to be greater than the latter (as 11 for
example to 9) he may be said to believe it:
when less (as 9 for example to 11) he may be
said to disbelieve it.
