Ins. Offences against Condition. Adultery.

— exposes the Husband to contempt of conduct. Now it is evidently by much the more common case for
the husband not to be willing that it should happen:
he has a constant and obvious interest & that generally
a very strong one that it should not happen; it is only
by accident that he can have an interest that it
should not happen. In general therefore if it does
happen there is reason for looking upon the husband
as a dupe. Although therefore a case should
happen in which he permitts it with his eyes open
and in return for an advantage which he looks upon
as greater than the disadvantage, still however the
condition he puts himself in by this means is of that
condition sort which is ordinarily the condition of a dupe.
Besides this it is a condition to which a man is
induced to in consequence of a woman's preferring
another man to him. The case then is A man
to whom another is known to be preferred as being
less capable of given giving pleasure especially of giving
a woman pleasure to a woman and particularly
in that way becomes by that means to a certain
degree the object of contempt; or at least of that sort
of affection sentiment which in the higher degrees of it is
termed contempt. The case is then that for the sake
of some interested advantage he has voluntarily
put himself in that situation which renders
a man on more accounts than one, a double account contemptible.

32.

Facility why reprobated This being the case some people will censure regard such
a facility with a sentiment of disapprobation some as a meanness, others as a sin:
they will differ in the grounds of their sentiment,
but they will agree in the sentiment itself: so that between
the one and the other it will be pretty generally
undermin'd.
