Self-contradiction of the world It is curious enough to observe the self-contradiction
with which this offence is spoken of which
prevails in general the sentiments which
in general express upon on the occasion subject of this
offence. Under Mention it under the name of Adultery, there is scarce
any one who will venture not to condemn it:
the very same practise under the name of gallantry
will be that received by the very same person
with a smile of approbation.

Moral the best punishment The mildest, the most efficacious & in a
variety of respects the most convenient check to this
practise is the censure of the world. It can
punish approaches even the most distant; it can
punish upon vague presumptions: in neither of
which cases can political punishment be applied with
any safety or propriety. It can cover command by this means
a large extent of ground in the career of guilt:
while the artillery of the Law can play only upon
a single point.

itself without the censure of the Law to point it
and set it on? The example practise in England
seems to prove that it might. In case of adultery
there is no censure passed on the adultress but
what is passed by the censure of the world [Qu?]
