Reasons Offences against Condition — Adultery
to be corrupted, or their vigilance eluded: and it is because
such accidents sometimes happen, that adulteries
in countries where chastity is proved come
sometimes to be committed. It is these accidents that
furnish incidents for plays: but frequently as they
happen even in real life, yet they are not to so natural
even in fiction, as not to appear extraordinary.
A little good advice one might give to the
Husband would be sufficient, (one is apt to think
on such occasions) to save him from all the snares
that can be laid for him by the Poet. Unless
where the affections of the woman are already alienated
from her husband, and she is actually upon
the look-out for a gallant, it is seldom that a
man can come to form an acquaintance with
her, but that the husband if he has any suspicion
may put a stop to it before it has got to
such a length as to be dangerous.
These considerations and a multitude of others
which it would be tedious to mention insist upon
naturally since occurring to a person in that condition,
there are few husbands I suppose but
must be sensible that they have it in a great measure
or rather altogether in their own power, if
ever they think it necessary and worth the while
to guard thems to take effectual measures for guarding themselves against
a misfortune of this kind. does And in this respect this is one
circumstance which constitutes as we have seen [there is] a remarkable difference
between the public mischief of this offence & that
of theft.
