Reasons Offences against Condition — Adultery

defiled, her love affections for you continuing entire? The argument
as far as it goes seems to be just. The
private mischief of Adultery as far as concerns the
husband seems is apt it should seem to be greater than that of Rape.
But the public mischief as we have seen is incomparably
less: and it is the public part of the mischief
in every case that constitutes by far the
greater share of the whole mass. + + See Introd.

From p. 9
11. Danger of disease
11. Another mischief is the danger there is of the
husband's contracting the peculiar malady conta which is
unhappily the too frequent consequence of a promiscuous intercourse
between the sexes. As no person is born
with this malady, upon him at least in such a state as
to be contagious, the appearance of so as an
infidelity in either party may be the means
of subjecting the other to a severe misfortune to
which he could not be subjected by any other
means. This malady This malady it is to be observed,
when it infects the marriage bed is apt
to be severer than in any the circumstances in
which it is commonly contracted. As a man or
a woman in these circumstances suspects it less it may have proceeded
a considerable length before he knows what is the
matter with him When a man has to do with
a common prostitute, he knows what he has to
expect: upon the first appearance of any indisposition he goes to takes medical assistance & gets cured.
