Of Family Imposture
as the common case of Adultery: in which not only the person
of the woman is defiled but her affections are alienated.
The case of the faux Martin Guerre, (a) uncommon as it
is, is provided for in the above definition. Such an imposture
can hardly be carried on with the least probability of success
without the Wife's being an Accomplice.
The most common case of Family Imposture is that of
a suppositio partus; where a married woman produces and brings
up as her own a child which is not her own. This kind of
fraud is most commonly practised in families of condition: and
the most common motive to it is a disagreement between the woman and the
next heir. The case may be either that there was no pregnancy:
or that there was a pregnancy and delivery; but the child dying
or growing sickly, another was procured in the room of it. Instances
