opportunities of advancing one's fortune; such as buying
bargains, procuring costumers, placing out money, gaining
friends by good offices, making advantageous matches
for one's self, one's children &c.
9.— Or abridgement of the Liberty of enjoying agreeable
society and conversation such as that of relations friends
and acquaintance.
As to the hardships which depend upon the severity
of the confinement, such of them as are to be intentionally
inflicted seem principally to be as follows.
1. Confinement to disagreeable diet.
2. Want of comfortable accommodations for repose.
3. Want of Light.
4. Exclusion from the Society of other Sex.
5. Total exclusion from the society of relations, friends,
and acquaintance. See Simple Imprisonment N. 9.
6. Total Seclusion from Society.
7. Seclusion from the implements of writing or other mute
discourse.
