— to Offences through calamity. With regard to Offences through calamity, the nature
of these being as we have seen almost infinitely
diversified, so ought the question nature of their
punishment. In general however the quantum of
it will need not to be so great nor the quality of
so exemplary as in the case of the other branch of semi-public
offences: partly it in partly because the
mischief is less, partly because the profit and consequently the tempation is less, partly
because the responsibility is ordinarily greater.
