Of Frauds relative to the Coin.
Reasons
Reasons.
An offence of this sort differs nothing from a common
fraud. Now in the case of the sort of Fraud which is committed
by Counterfeiters and Diminishers of the Coin and
their Associates the demand for punishment is greater,
than in the Case of a common Fraud ; owing to the superior
difficulty of detection. See Quest. V.

I. 1. Because of the difficulty of detection.
Because the difficulty of detection is greater in the case of
Frauds upon the Coin than in the case of Frauds at large, and
perhaps of any of the Offences against Property.+ + See Epxplanation 1.st of the 1.st Rule of Proportion between Punishments and Offences.
1. The original Offence itself, the operation of diminishing
or couterfeiting the Coin, may be carried on at a man's
own home: a place where in general no person has a right to
come: he may also take his own time for it.
2. As to the derivative Offence, the operation of uttering,
this, if conducted with common prudence, may generally be carried
