is in question it is an abuse of terms to talk of
duty: they have an interest, but they can not have
a duty. Each man member has a duty towards the whole
each member while there is a sovereign has a duty
towards the sovereign as the representative of the
whole: each member owes obedience to the sovereign
in as far as the paying obedience to the sovereign
is the way to promote the interest of the whole. ][
It is true that considering the sovereign for the time being as in as far
as he has a particular interest of his own in being
so, inasfar as he has been accus is in the expectation of
continuing to receive those benefits which from his
station he has been accustomed to receive, in as
far as it would be an affliction to him to be deprived

than equivalent to the joy of him to whom they
