INTRODUCTION Of CRIMES in general

A Crime in answer to the Question if it be asked merely what it is that gives it that name in the one technical Sense of the word is an[y] act done committed or omitted in against any
violation of a [Public] Law invested with a Sanction greater than ordinary either commanding or forbidding it + + Blackstone Anal. p. 104

But if it be asked what it is that makes it as that is no explanation of it's nature deserve it?

A Crime is an act producing (unhappiness producing or tending to produce mischief in Society which cannot be restrained the ordinary sanctions
of Law are insufficient to restrain.

When we speak of an act being or being 2 not 1 a crime it is with reference sometimes
to one, sometimes to the other of these two kinds of definitions; [which may be stiled in
conformity to that division of Logicians (which perhaps is useful applicable scarce in the any other
subject besides this the present) The first Definitio "nominis" of the name, the latter
"rei" of the thing.]

The This aqui uni vocality thus this term of expression [noted ] will no longer be productive of confusion.
