As an exemplification of the consequences of overloading
the time of the first prison in the kingdom with a
trust by far too bulky to be exercised in fact even by his
upper servants, I will beg leave just to mention
to give your Lordship a hint of a fact mentioned
to me at the time by very high authority as being
of considerable notoriety no secret in of certain circles. Thi — A near relation

were two) had been convicted of capital crimes upon

An A young officer had

nearly not remotely connected with a person stationed at in the portieres no great
distance from the gates of life and death, of the fountain above spoken of, the consequence
was a reprieve: — the reprobates went into the corps; the
bounty moneys went into the young man's pocket. In a
case like this, on an occasion like this, Your Lordship, I
am sure will not expect me to mention persons, or so
much as times or places. None however are so perfectly out of
reach, what that Your Lordship were it deemed worth
your Lordships notice might be able to correct whatever
there may be of incorrectness (perfectly involuntary it is most
certainly, if there be any) in this note. The person I had it from
