Reluctance in the
neighbourhood, no sufficient
ground for negating
the existing
choice.
2. As to the reluctance entertained in the neighbourhood,
if any such sentiment should be found still to subsist,
although it will be, as it all along has been, a matter of
very sincere concern to your Memorialist, yet, were it
ever so much more universal & decided, the objection
afforded by it, is that sort of objection, to which, under
the acknowledged circumstances of the case, it is impossible,
as your Memorialist humbly conceives, that
your Lordships justice should conceived itself at liberty so
much as to listen, in the present instance.
Nothing, as your Memorialist at the outset begs
leave to assure your Lordships once for all, nothing could
be more repugnant to the principles or habits of your Memorialist,
than to treat with brevity or indifference the feelings
of any individual who may have conceived himself
prejudiced by the choice, and in particular, of the very
respectable gentlemen, on whose part these apprehensions
have manifested themselves in a more conspicuous degree.
Sensations of this sort have in his estimation, sensations
of this sort, by whatever cause excited, have, in
proportion to their energy, an equal claim to attention &
deference. Your Memorialist is indeed free to confess,
that were he in the situation of those gentlemen, no such
