SS34 Prior intrigues - Tergivisation of Mr Rose 4
To render the manifestations, made in the course of it, intelligible, I Rose
know not how to avoid troubling your Lordship, in this place:
with the copy of a Letter, addressed by me to the Honourable Secretary,
between six and seven months before
that time. T It is not in every
part of it equally necessary with reference
to the present purpose: but as the whole of
it might be necessary, on a future occasion at a future period, and on the occasion of
a future narrative
of the eventstransactions of
a preceeding period
a degree of suspicion is apt to attach itself
to imperfect documents. I will con even
take the liberty of inserting, at , once
for all, without remission or abridgements
Here transcribe
A.B.1 Mr Bentham to Mr Rose. 23 Feby 1798.
In the case of Had thereat been the address been
to Mr Long, no answer would have ever come:
but from Mr Rose since the very next day
an answer, of which the following is a copy..
B.2 Mr Rose to Mr Bentham 24 Feby 1798
I observe by some orders from the or Finance that
among the subjects they are about to enter on the consideration
of the expence of the Convicts which I am extremely glad of for
various reasons - I think you may with perfect propriety lay
before then the whole of your plan;they may perhaps think
themselves confined to the expence only of the system - but
the difficulty might be got over by a special any
event it is competent so then so consider of your
for taking care of the Convicts in the Hulks- I have always
wished to the measures proposed by you of solitary confinement
& in difficulties have about
it: the one you last mentioned I could not foresee. If
the Committee can be prevailed with to take up the business
the public would be satisfied that it should either or
at to give up as they should Report because I am
sure their opinion would have very great weight as it
ought to have: —
I am quite ignorant of the expence you state yourself to have
been at.-
