§§6 Buying out Leases
28 Jany 1800
D 6 7 (d) Another contempt specimen of Mr White expressed
not to me (as before) to me alone — a man sans
consequence — but under the very will of his Masters Superiors
and in the hearing of his fellow servants. co-ordinates Business
is again given him to do — will he do it? — not no, not
he: not unless I fall down and worship him,
and when I do, he will not hear me. What
must these men be, who having with the power in their
hands super sit still and see themselves objects
of habitual contempt to a Mr White! these subordinates — and such a
subordinate! having powers — legal power at least, at any rate
however reduced by influence to impotence.
( D.7 6 (e) The question was a question —not of
inquiry, but of insult. [+] [+] His air, his true
voice was that of a
Schoolmaster to
truant Scholar. He wanted nothing of me
he did not so much as pretend to want any thing
of me — He would not hear me.
D.7 6 (f) Where, in all this time, had been the kind
officiousness, that had taken the trouble of receiving my
money out of my hands? [See §§5.]
D7 6 (g) [See §§.21 .] This suppression, on the part of Mr Long, is
a feature too speaking to need any further comment.
Determined that the thing should set what he knew ought to be done and
had promised to see done should not be done, he pockets
every thing that could prevent render it less easy to
permit its being done.
