VI 2
1 Simple Imprisonment
Simple imprisonment is in its own nature
a very expensive mode of transport
punishment. So long as it lasts, the prisoner
must be maintained, or it is not imprisonment
but death. Property for the most part he has none,
it is his count of it property that brings him there.
From the labour employment, whatever it
was to which he had been indebted for his
maintenance, he is secluded by the discipline
of the prison: and, by the supposition, no
other new employment is put into his hands.
Imprisonment or other confinement coupled
within forced labour, and employ'd
labour or naturally in a
very or punishment or rather to speak properly out
