IV. Expenses produced
by the preventive
branch of the Police
III Expenses relative to the preventive branch of
the Police.
Under this head may be classed
1. Expenses of Coroners. For the It is for the
prevention of Murders that this sort of enquiry
is carried on in the case where the death is
of the violent kind, or the scene of it in a place
of confinement - or in a word where it hap
takes place under any other circumstances that
present the slightest ground of apprehension
in regard to that atrocious crime.
2. Expenses relative to the inspection of
weights and measures.
The use of Among the uses though not the only use of an institution of this kind is obviously
the prevention of frauds in regard
to weight and measure.
Expenses of Coroners is a head that occurrs
in all accounts of County expenditure.
Expense of relative to weights and measures
form a head in the County Accounts of Cornwall: -
not in those of Dorsetshire.
Salaries of certain classes of Officers, such
as Patroles and Watchmen may be considered
as belonging to coming under this head. The services of
these Officers are subservient partly to the
purpose of prevention partly to the purpose
of coming under the head of prosecution, as
events happen to arise. It is by their being
ready, but more immediately by being kn
known to be ready upon occasion to not take a part in
the way of arrest and conveyance before a
Magistrate in the prosecution of delinquents that
their presence has the effect in a certain degree
of preventing such occasions from taking place.
