Dealers in Second
hand goods - their
tendency to become
Receivers of stolen
goods.
In the list of occupations thus productive pregnant — <add>presenting</add>
of with a special demand for special and
constant inspection, those which are conversant
in second hand articles of all sorts, appear
to occupy the foremost rank. Several causes
contribute to render give particular strength to the temptations to dishonesty
peculiar in the instance of this extensive class of dealers.
In comparison of new goods Second hand articles are apt to be sordid in appearance
and low in value: dealers persons possessed
of considerable capital or credit naturally fly
from such degraded trades: persons of who have
very little of either are enabled find themselves able to engage in
them. Thieves and the associates of thieves
embark in them without difficulty. In the
annual sum total of stolen goods furnished by each
year, articles in use, that is goods which
when transferred from the individual occupant
to the public stage come under the denomination
of second hand goods will naturally constitute
by much the largest share. [x] [x] Ignorant of the real <add>true</add>
value, alike by the
fear of detection and the
passion for enjoyment The criminal
occupants of such goods will naturally
be content ready to part with them almost for any
price: the rate of profit upon such old goods
thus rendered so much higher than that of
new goods of the same presents a degree of
temptation not to be : a temptation
more than ordinarily strong presenting
itself to breast a mind more than ordinarily susceptible
the consequence is such as may be imagined.
