Calendar of delinquency
This, like other contributions to the science of
political arithmetic and not less than any of
them, is that sort of acquisition of that sort that
promises to be from the very nature of actually generally acceptable to persons
of all parties and descriptions:- a perpetual
of source fund of information, generally interesting and
perpetually new. Independently of its utility
it affords promises amusement, and each individual
will reckon upon making his own use of it.
Men in office and men out of office, men of the speculation
and the busy activespeculation and men of business industrious
and the idle - all agree - in the satisfaction they
testify at the acquisition of a stock of interesting facts some with one view, some with another - all agree in
their love of appetite for facts.
In the metropolis and its vicinity the useCalendars or Bills as they are called
of mortality, the lists of deaths with their
supposed causes, have for upon upwards of a Century<add>these many years</add> this Century and a for the vicinity of the Metropolis
half past a century and more been collected and published, and use
has been made of them in a variety of ways.
In the present instance, sureely the connection
between science and art, between theory and
practice is surely rather more intimate than in that: criminality
efforts are rather more withinobedient to the power of human
causes: criminalitysin in every line is but too difficult
to prevent, but in no line quite so difficult
as death.
