Terms of Use

Thank you for your interest in Transcribe Bentham.

Transcribe Bentham is a collaborative project managed by the Bentham Project at University College London and hosted by Digital Services, CoSector – University of London.

By registering as a Transcribe Bentham user or consulting the site, you agree to the following Terms of Use. Please read these terms carefully. If you do not agree with these Terms, please refrain from registering for an account or consulting the site.

Code of conduct

Anyone who is aged 16 or over is welcome to create a Transcribe Bentham user account and begin the important work of transcribing Bentham’s writings.

We ask that transcribers endeavour to treat each other with consideration and respect in order to maintain a pleasant environment for all. The Transcribe Bentham administrators reserve the right to block users who fail to work with others in a civil manner.

When a user contributes to Transcribe Bentham, their contributions are publicly available. Transcripts worked on by a volunteer are associated with their username on Transcribe Bentham and in UCL Library’s digital repository.

Transcripts should be a user’s own work or copied from a public domain resource which is free from copyright. By contributing material to this site, you confirm that you are the rightful owner of that material and that you licence Transcribe Bentham to redistribute it under the conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivative 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) licence.

Transcripts submitted on the site can be changed and re-used by other users, including the Transcribe Bentham administrators. We reserve the right to delete inappropriate material from the site.

Privacy policy

Registration via a valid email address is required for those who wish to contribute transcriptions to the site.

We value your privacy. Personal data relating to registered users (e-mail addresses and usernames) will be collected, stored and used. This data will be used only as it is required for setting up, maintaining or changing our relationship with users.

Transcribe Bentham will communicate electronically with users via messages on the Transcription Desk or through the email address provided during the registration process. You can opt-out of this communication at any time by sending a message to the Transcribe Bentham administrators (transcribe.bentham@ucl.ac.uk).

Transcribe Bentham will not share personal data, such as email addresses, with third parties unless required to do so by law.

Users should take care to protect their account details from third-party access.

Cookies are files placed on your computer when you visit most websites. Transcribe Bentham uses cookies for the following purposes:

• To compile and analyse statistics about user behaviour using Google Analytics. This information is analysed in aggregate form so that individual users cannot be identified.

• To remember if users are logged in to the website and to make sure each user session is secure.

Data about user behaviour, such as the time and content of edits made by each user, is publicly available via ‘User contributions’ lists, and in other aggregated forms on the Mediawiki. This data is analysed by the Transcribe Bentham administrators.

Users may request to delete their account at any time by submitting a request to the Transcribe Bentham administrators (transcribe.bentham@ucl.ac.uk).
