Getting started with TSX

Jump to: navigation, search

This page is intended to provide users with a very brief introduction to using TSX, and is by no means a comprehensive guide to all of its features. Once you are familiar with navigating the site, you should consult:

You can also visit a page containing examples of Bentham's handwriting.

At the bottom of the page are two tables: one describing the function of the buttons on the TSX interface, and a second describing the buttons of the text-encoding toolbar.

Getting Started: a step-by-step guide

Registration form
  1. First, register an account to order to access and transcribe manuscripts. Click the 'Sign Up' button on the TSX front page. A short form will pop-up in which you should enter your details.
  2. Once you have registered, you will receive an automated email containing a link which needs to be validated in order to activate your account. If this email does not appear in your inbox, please check your spam/junk email folder as it may have been redirected there by your email client.
  3. Click on 'Sign In', and enter your email address and password
  4. Click on 'Desk', and select a manuscript to transcribe from the 'Manuscript Collections' tab.
  5. Magnify or move the image to see the manuscript text more clearly. Magnification can be increased or decreased by clicking the plus or minus buttons on the ‘Image’ pane or by using the mouse-wheel; drag the image to re-position it.

Transcribing and encoding a manuscript, without assistance from the HTR technology

  1. Type your transcript of the manuscript in the text area.
  2. We recommend pressing the 'Save' button at regular intervals.
  3. Use the toolbar above the transcription area to add text encoding to the various features of the manuscript.
  4. Preview your encoded transcript using the 'Preview' tab.
  5. When your transcript is complete, click 'Save' for the final time to submit it for checking.
  6. For tips on encoding, please see the video tutorial below, or visit the detailed encoding guidelines page. We recommend clicking play, then the cog-wheel icon and selecting an HD option in the 'Quality' menu, and then the 'full-screen' button on the far right of the video toolbar.
