This paper should have the signature but
a
[II] [M . . . . Auditor . . .] For the purpose of authentication, were
it only for appearance sake, the name of this Officer should be in
the form of an autograph: but this autograph need not be written
with a pen: a a fac similie, engraved from the hand writing, is as much
as could be afforded in such a case keep on signing To Notes in a number adequate
to what might easily come to be the amount of the demand, would be
too much for any one hand; perhaps for even a considerable number
of hands; much more for the hand of this great Officer of State whose time
is much too valuable to be consumed upon a sort of operation could so ill be spared for mechanical and subaltern occupation <add>operations</add>
for which even mechanism without the lowest degree of human reason might be made since
it has been made sufficient—
Instances, it is true, in such transactions are
